Further Research into My Chosen City

What is the culture of the society?
As Isaura is a city based on dry terrain, means water has become really important to them; to the point where it is now a form of worship. This city may seem to be overrun with various techniques in drawing up water however, it could be due to the number of crops and plants being grown as it would be the only source of food and materials that they have access to. Therefore, these techniques of drawing up water (using wells) could be considered as a holy place, for example presented within temples and shrines.

As I am looking into the religious side, I could link this to Shintoism. This is a Japanese religion that dates back to the early 8th century and it consists of the worship of ancestors and other nature spirits. They have a belief in a sacred power also known as 'kami' where they praise the existence of these gods/spirits. This is because they believe that kami are close to humans and have an influence on their lives as well as nature and other events.

Therefore, Shintoism can be linked back to the culture of the society of Isaura. "The city's gods, according to some people, live in the depths, in the black lake that feeds the underground streams. According to others, the gods live in the buckets that rise, suspended from cable." As without the water or the buckets to bring it up, the city of Isaura would therefore become inhabitable.

How can I expand on the engineering aspect?
As Isaura is based in the desert there is multiple things to consider, for example bringing up water by hand would not be sufficient as the need for water is much greater. This is where I'd look into the water also being brought up within the windmills, as it would produce a larger amount within a quicker time. Another thing is what materials that could be used. As the city is based in the desert, sand would be a common material that also can be compressed and cemented together to create sandstone. Alongside this, as plants are constantly being grown, wood would be another material that can be used.

Tyler Edlin
Tyler Edlin is a 2D character and environment designer alongside, an illustrator and a concept artist. He started by taking basic courses within the fundamentals of drawing, painting and design. One of his early struggles was to do with the value of the environments. To overcome this he focused more on studies alongside, isolating his weaknesses where he was able to work more in black and white (outlines, tone and depth) before adding any colour.
